Information for Submitting a Senior Design Project
Thank you for considering interaction with the UCSD Department of Bioengineering and our undergraduate students by being a Sponsor of a Senior Design Team.
A Senior Design Project is now required for two of our undergraduate majors, Bioengineering and Bioengineering: Biotechnology, accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology. The requirement is nearing completion of a third-year cycle in Academic Year 2009-10. We are now soliciting sponsors for design projects to be completed in Academic Year 2009-10!
Example projects from previous years are:
- Knee Measurement System
- Designing and constructing microfluidic devices
- Designer E. coli for Restriction Enzyme Production
- Whole body automated detection of skin melanoma lesions
- Design and development of a reliable alanine sensor
The Senior Design Projects are completed as part of a 4-quarter course sequence
- Quarter 1, Spring 2009 - Selection
- Quarter 2, Fall 2009 - Design: research, finalize design
- Quarter 3, Winter 2010 - Implementation: build prototype
- Quarter 4, Spring 2010 - Presentation: podium, poster
We encourage collaborative projects: Sponsor / Client + UCSD Bioengineering Faculty Member
- Sponsor / Client may be an individual in Industry or the School of Medicine
- Design and fabrication is done under UCSD faculty supervision in the Bioengineering Instructional Lab, which has capabilities for prototype development and testing.
- Limited departmental funds are available for these projects.
- Expectations for Sponsor / Client
- Develop the project with the Course Coordinators
- Provide information for an overview of the project to prospective students (Spring 2008)
- Meet with the design team, 1h/week for two 10-week quarters (Fall 2008 and Winter 2009)
- Attend the final presentation event (Spring 2009)
- Additional support and other costs associated with project (supplies, materials)
