BENG 187B: Development

The second quarter of the senior design sequence involves the development of original bioengineering designs as solutions to problems in biology or medicine. Topics cover needs assessment, problem definition and specifications, alternatives analysis and overall presentation. Constraints are considered such as economic issues, manufacturing and quality assurance, ethics and safety. The course will include oral presentations and formal engineering reports, web pages and notebooks.

3-Unit Fall Laboratory

Fall quarter 3 unit labs involves the development of original bioengineering designs to solve problems in a particular discipline within bioengineering. The course includes analysis of economic issues, manufacturing and quality assurance, ethics, safety, government regulations, and patent requirements. An oral presentation and formal engineering report are required.

Calibrated Peer Review of Faulty Design Assignment

If you would like to earn points back on the first individual assignment and work on your technical writing skills, please review these instructions for using the Calibrated Peer Review tool. Please note that there are two different deadlines associated with this assignment and that you should not re-write your faulty design assignment; just submit the original version.

Group Presentations

Group presentations begin on November 16. Each presentation will be a maximum of 5 minutes and should summarize the team's accomplishments to date. Specifically, the presentation should include 1) a background slide that established the need for the design, 2) a clear statement of the problem, 3) brief overview of one or more design ideas including figures, and 4) a simplified Gantt chart or timeline indicating completed tasks and future plans. The schedule of presentations is below:

  • Nov 16 : Groups 1-7
  • Nov 23 : Groups 8-14
  • Nov 30 : Groups 15-20
